Trustbuilding Program Canada

Tuesday, 24. September 2019

Initiatives of Change Canada is one of the three countries participating in the Trustbuilding Program for 2019. What made them interested in being a part of the Program? What are the issues they will address through trustbuilding? We decided to ask the team!

Why is IofC Canada interested in participating in the Trustbuilding Program?

IofC Canada has a long history with promoting effective intercultural and inter-religious bridge building across societal divides, creating safe spaces where people of different origins, beliefs and religions can have dialogue, undo prejudices, and reach across divides. IofC Canada has had a strong presence and impact on Canadian affairs, especially in the years around World War II and for the subsequent decades. This included a variety of media (books, plays and musicals) as well as important connections to First Nations.

What is the focus of your project?

The project in Canada aims to create safe spaces for honest conversations for people from different groups who are willing to face the issues feeding targeted divides in Quebec society. We will provide concrete tools and methodologies to address ignorance, build joint action through mutual understanding and through the understanding of historical and socio-political realities and experiences underlying our current society.

“Organizations are mobilizing to support the community in the implementation

of citizen violence prevention initiatives.”

How has your team prepared to make this project a success?

As part of our preparations, a recent baseline study was completed on Quebec’s last decade of programming. An important result of the study was building our capacity to ensure we could successfully take the pilot on. The establishment of a local steering committee in Quebec, consisting of external stakeholders, has also been significant.

What are you looking forward to this year?

In October we will launch our program, hosting an information session for an estimate of 50 people who will be a mix of partners, team members, potential facilitators, and trainers. This is our moment to introduce the concept of our pilot to those we feel are most called and aligned to join us on the journey!

The Trustbuilding Program is aimed at addressing divisive issues at the international and national levels, on the premise that only those who have undergone the internal process of becoming trustworthy themselves can close gaps across the globe. The Program was launched by Initiatives of Change International in 2019 with projects in Kenya, Canada and France.
